چکیده

and Introduction Interaction of a stochastic background of gravitational radiation with celestial systems changes their dynamical elements in a random manner and give rise to secular changes in time(Berttoti 1973, Mashhoon etal 1981, Khosroshahi and Sobouti 1997). It has been speculated that a study of such secular changes might serve as a possible mean of detecting gravitational radiation. In this spirit we study the angular momentum transfer from a random background of radiation either to a rotating star or to an oscillating one. The angular momentum transferred to such objects by a continuous plane wave is proportional to time, t, and by an stochastic background is proportional to t.

Possible direct method to determine the radius of a star from the spectrum of gravitational wave signals

We computed the spectrum of gravitational waves from a dust disk star of radius R inspiraling into a Kerr black hole of mass M and specific angular momentum a. We found that when R is much larger than the wave length of the quasinormal mode, the spectrum has several peaks and the separation of peaks Deltaomega is proportional to R-1 irrespective of M and a. This suggests that the radius of the ...

Spin Angular Momentum Imparted by Gravitational Waves

Following the demonstration that gravitational waves impart linear momentum, it is argued that if they are polarized they should impart angular momentum to appropriately placed 'test rods' in their path. A general formula for this angular momentum is obtained and used to provide expressions for the angular momentum imparted by plane and cylindrical gravitational waves. While the plane [1] and c...

Alignment of Protostars and Circumstellar Disks during the Embedded Phase

Star formation proceeds via the collapse of a molecular cloud core over multiple dynamical timescales. Turbulence within cores results in a spatially non-uniform angular momentum of the cloud, causing a stochastic variation in orientation of the disk forming from the collapsing material. In the absence of star-disk angular momentum coupling, such disk-tilting would provide a natural mechanism f...

Gravitational waves from a particle orbiting around a rotating black hole: Post-Newtonian expansion.

Using the Teukolsky and Sasaki-Nakamura equations for the gravitational perturbation of the Kerr spacetime, we calculate the post-Newtonian expansion of the energy and angular momentum luminosities of gravitational waves from a test particle orbiting around a rotating black hole up through P 5/2 N order beyond the quadrupole formula. We apply a method recently developed by Sasaki to the case of...

Detectability of Gravitational Radiation from Prompt and Delayed Star Collapse to a Black Hole

We consider the emission of gravitational waves in the two proposed models for the collapse of a massive star to a black hole: the prompt collapse, in which nearly all the star collapses to a black hole in a dynamical time scale, and the delayed collapse, in which a light black hole, or a neutron star, which subsequently accretes matter, forms due to the fall-back achieving, in the neutron star...
